What should I do while waiting on the shoulder?

Get the hazards on first, before anything else. If the vehicle is on a highway shoulder and there is a barrier, the safest place to wait is usually behind it rather than inside the car, because a stopped vehicle on a shoulder is the thing that gets struck. If the car is in a live lane and cannot be moved, that is a call to police rather than to us — no roadside repair is safe with traffic passing at speed. On a residential street or in a parking lot, staying with the vehicle is fine.

Which roads across Durham Region do you cover?

The 401 through Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Courtice, and Bowmanville, along with the 407, the 412, and the 418. Away from the highways we work the arterials that carry most local traffic — Taunton Road, Simcoe Street, Brock Street, Kingston Road, and the concession roads running north toward Brooklin, Port Perry, and Uxbridge. Winter conditions differ sharply between the lakeshore and the higher ground north of Taunton, which is worth mentioning when you call.

What cannot be fixed at the roadside?

Anything mechanical beyond tires and batteries. A vehicle that has overheated, lost drive, or is leaking fluid needs a shop and usually a tow, and pretending otherwise wastes a stranded driver an hour they do not have. We are direct about that on the phone rather than after arriving. What we do cover is the large share of roadside breakdowns that are, in practice, a tire or a battery — which is most of them.

No. Jang Mobile Tire Service fixes tires and batteries at the roadside and does not tow. If a vehicle needs recovery, we will say so on the phone rather than attending and telling you afterwards, so you can call a tow operator without losing time. Can you reach a car stopped on the 401?

Jang Mobile Tire Service covers the 401 corridor through Durham Region. Whether roadside work is safe depends on where the vehicle has stopped: a wide shoulder away from a bend is workable, a narrow shoulder on a curve often is not. If the car is in a live lane, call police first. We will tell you honestly when a location is not safe to work at.
