What winter is actually like in Whitby

Whitby is one of the few places in Durham with three numbered highways crossing it, and the 412 is the one that changes the winter picture. It runs north to south between the 401 and the 407 across open farmland with very little to break the wind, so it drifts and blows over in conditions where the 401 a few kilometres south is merely wet. Drivers who use it as a shortcut to the 407 are the ones most often caught out, usually in the first serious storm of the season rather than the worst one.
